Our story
Why we built this
The short version: we watched home-service businesses pay $1,100 a month for software they didn't own, and decided to do something about it.
The problem we kept seeing
Every home-service business we talked to was running the same stack: a field-service management platform, a reputation management tool, an AI chat widget, a review platform, and a job photo app. Each one charging a monthly fee. None of them talking to each other well.
The total bill was usually somewhere between $800 and $1,400 a month. For software they didn't own. That would be repriced at renewal. That they'd lose access to if they stopped paying.
Meanwhile, the cost of building a custom platform had dropped dramatically. The tooling that made a $200k build in 2019 now makes a $6k build in 2025. The SaaS vendors hadn't adjusted their pricing. The opportunity was obvious.
The three shifts
Three things happened at the same time that made this the right moment to build Own the Works:
- The build cost dropped. AI-assisted development, modern frameworks, and managed infrastructure collapsed the cost of building a production-grade platform. What took a team of five engineers six months now takes a small team six weeks.
- AI became a channel. AI chat and voice aren't features anymore — they're the first point of contact for a growing share of service calls. A platform built in 2019 wasn't designed for this. We built Own the Works from the ground up to be agent-ready.
- Local search got harder. Google's local algorithm now rewards depth — service-area pages, structured data, and content that answers real questions. A generic SaaS site can't compete. A custom platform built for your specific trade and geography can.
What we believe
We believe home-service businesses should own their technology. Not rent it. Not be subject to annual price increases. Not lose their customer data if they switch providers.
We believe the best platform for a plumber in Phoenix is different from the best platform for an HVAC company in Minneapolis — and that a one-size-fits-all SaaS product will never be as good as a platform built specifically for your trade, your market, and your customers.
And we believe that AI should be a channel you own, not a feature you rent.
What this means for you
You get a platform built for your trade. Source code delivered to your repo. No monthly platform fee. No vendor lock-in. No permission needed to make changes.
If we disappear tomorrow, your platform keeps running. That's the point.
